If you need sharpening only: run the knife through slots 1 and 3 3 to 5 times in the same direction. If you want to sharpen a completely blunt knife: run the knife through the slot 2 3 to 5 times in the same direction. To sharpen the scissors, you must open them and insert them into slot 4, making 3 to 5 movements in the same direction.
